When you visit Ellis Island be sure to look for Albert & Olga's names on the
Wall of Honor. They should be there some time in late 2001.
On April 26,1909, 22-year-old Alert Iverson SOLAAS (later Albert SOLBERG) set out from Bergen, Norway to America. He arrived in Liverpool, England on April 30 where he boarded the S.S. Cedric of the White Star Line. Nine days later, May 9, 1909, Alert and 600 others arrived at Ellis Island. The S.S. Stavangerfjord of the Norwegian American line left Oslo on April 11, 1929 for Stavanger and on the next day for Bergen where Olga SKAAR EIKELID boarded along with 106 others. The crew of 270 together with the 844 passengers arrived in Brooklyn, New York on April 22 at the pier at 30th street. The next day, Albert and Olga were married at the Norwegian Seamen's Church in Brooklyn. |
