1909-6-10 Letter from Dorothea Solaas to Albert Solberg (Ltr03)

1909-6-10 Letter from Dorothea Solaas to Albert Solberg (Ltr03)
From:Dorothea Solås
To:Albert I Solås
Date:1909-06-10
Translator:Trygve Solås
Other Dorothea Letters 1909-6-10 (Ltr03)
1909-8-30 (Ltr05)

Translator notes "The letter is written from Alberts sister Dorotea, or just Tea. She later married and moved to a little farm close to Leirvik, kalled Kjøreneset. Even Ivar lived there for some time after leaving Solaas. (funny enough, the shipyard where I work is placed on that farm)" ...

Ingunn Solås adds, "Albert sister Tea sent him greetings especially from MARTA FOS in the letter Trygve has translated, and in [a future] letter, Tea is writing about ANA WULF, who is (or would be) happy having a letter from Albert. She is also writing about a girl named GUDRUN, whose picture can be sent to Albert. So it seem like Alert was a popular guy among the girls in the Leirvik-area."

Ed. note: Tea would have been 19 years old and Alert 22 at the time of this writing, about one month after Alert arrived in America

Fos 10th of June 1909

Dearest Brother, brother. (?)

Thank you very much for the letter you sent to me, I was very happy to receive that letter. When I got to know that you had safely reached Amerika, I was very happy. I am much relieved, contrary to think about you out on the open sea. At that time I thought about you every hour and every day.

I am well and fit at the time, and a good health is something worth keeping, and that I wish for both me and you. Yes, you are asking for news, and that`s not strange at all, but I don`t have much to tell you. I will tell you what I know, though, even if that isn`t very much. You ask if you have been missed in ... that you can trust ... there was so much to take over because we didn`t have neither you nor Bark ..., it wasn`t much fun at the time, and then we got another helper on the farm. Yes you were missed by both ANDRIA and ANNA and most of all by me, brother.

It sure was hard for me that day [ca 4/23/1909] when you left from Leirvik quay and I had to go back. I didn`t know what to do, I was only thinking about you and I was crying a lot because I didn`t have anyone to ... now it`s getting better after I`ve learned that you have arrived safely, I`m so happy to know that.

Now I must tell you about 17th May march [Norwegian independence day] ... but I thought it was great fun, because I have never taken part of it before ... but I had a lot to do, because I was a member of the celebration committee and it was a lot to do a while, but it became more fun during the evening and everyone I met kept asking about you ... and I was to send you the best regards, and especially from MARTHA FOS, whom I believe you know.

I don`t have much to write, but I might think of something ... but I haven`t heard a word about you that`s true. You ask if there`s a lot of boys walking around here, but that`s not the case. The one who`s best isn`t at home and there are no one else visiting at nighttime, and the others around here ... so that I will ... on silk. So you won`t hear anything else about me than me being a good girl, you can rely on that. I don`t know anything else to write this time and then ...

You must write to me ... don`t wait long, I live in the hope that you will write and then I have to stop for now.

Love from your sister Tea ..

Take care ... to you from FINE-sister and IVAR ........
[That is sister Olufine (14 years old) and brother Edvard Solås (9 years)]
