Translator's Note: The letter from Sigurd to Alert is more difficult to translate. The few sentences I`ve had a chance to look at, goes like this:
To Alert Solaas.
You will presumably like that I write a few words to you. Now I will tell you that I have received my "Confirmation". It was the (last?) Sunday. [He goes on to tell about the priest who left the parish last autumn, and that a layman has taught them in evening school. Regretfully, this section is almost entirely illegible.]
Now I will come over to you and become something (probably earn money) because here the the wheat flour is very expensive. Regular corn seed costs more than 20 crowns per bag. Our work here is to break ... (probably reclaim land) ... and ... have I and IDVAR [Edvard, his younger brother would have been about 11 years old at this writing] so much trout, and yesterday we were in Dala..... and we fished so much as we could carry home. We have been there many times and fished.
Tobben [the name of the horse we bought from (probably Grandpa) [This could be either of Sigurd's grandpas. His paternal grandpa, Anfinn, died in 1917. His maternal grandpa, Lasse Vaagseth died in 1914] we have taken to the stallion and now we are hoping that she will have a foal but we are not sure about it. This autumn we have had all our lambs (returning from the mountains) father says he can not remember that we have ever had that happening before.
So now I don īt know anything more to write this time.
Sigurd Solaas
